Feadship - Yacht modifications

For a Superyacht designed by Feadship, manoeuvring trials were performed to determine the actual manoeuvring capabilities. To capture the key parameters, Zig-Zag and Spiral manoeuvres, Turning Circles, steering gear tests, bow thruster tests and Roll-period measurements were performed. This data functions as a benchmark for CFD calculations, that are performed to evaluate modifications to the yacht.

Client case

CEMRE - Esvagt Robert Boyle

Esvagt Robert Boyle, another cutting edge vessel designed by HAV Design. She has a Hybrid propulsion train with 3 Dual Fuel engines, 3 pure Methanol engines, 3 azimuthing thrusters, 2 retractable thrusters, DP-2 notation, and the list goes on and on. But what about the actual fuel consumption? Is it as good as designed and contracted? And what about manoeuvrability? For an independent verification, Janse Maritime Consultancy performed extensive sea trials, providing detailed and transparent results which were delivered to shipyard and owner.

Client case

Tersan Shipyard - Acta series

This is the new series for Acta Marine: Acta Pegasus, Acta Hercules, Acta Gemini and Acta Aquarius. A fabulous series of walk-to-work vessels constructed by Tersan Shipyard. They all have four azimuthing thrusters; two at the bow and two at the stern. The objective for Janse Maritime Consultancy is to obtain the best possible propulsion performance, by optimising power distribution and azimuth of the four thrusters. Synchronous recording of GPS, wind and propulsion parameters, in combination with transparent analysis and reporting give the yard and owner full insight in performance.

Client case

CEMRE - Efficiency verification NB1090

For the fully electric double-ended ferry “The Baltic Whale” (previously FUTURA), we verified the efficiency of the propulsion drive train: how much energy is lost between the batteries and the propellers? In addition, the achieved speed in contract conditions was analysed, using the latest ISO15016:2025 procedure. This new Scandlines ferry will sail between Puttgarden and Rødbyhavn soon!

Client case

CEMRE - ferries for Caledonian MacBrayne

Janse Maritime Consultancy joins the sea trials for a series of ferries built for Caledonian MacBrayne. These vessels will sail on the busy routes around Clyde and Hebrides, Scotland. For propulsion, two Electric Voith Schneider units (eVSP) are used providing excellent manoeuvrability. We were onboard to verify speed/power performance as independent verifier.

Client case

Atal-Damen collaboration

The mission of the collaboration between Atal Solutions and Damen Shipyards Group is the decarbonization of existing fleets. More specifically, by integrating retrofitting solutions that reduce CO₂, SO, and NO emissions by up to 99%, while enabling up to 20% fuel savings.

Janse Maritime Consultancy joins the collaboration by performing speed/power trials before and after retrofitting of 4 bulk carriers. The objective is to assess the fuel savings due to the installation of DAMEN’s air cavity system (DACS), Propeller Boss Cap Fins (PBCF) and application of silicon paint on the hull and propeller.

Pre-refit trials are completed; post-refit trials will be conducted soon!

Client case

Sefine Shipyard

Onboard live fish carrier VEIDNES sea trials were conducted in the Sea of Marmara. This beauty, built by Sefine Shipyard and designed by HAV Design, is truly packed with technological highlights! Janse Maritime Consultancy had the privilege to verify speed/power performance and fuel consumption as independent 3rd party verifier.

Client case

Astilleros Zamakona

For Heroinas de Salvora (C804 built by Astilleros Zamakona) we acted as independent 3rd party for bollard pull trials. This included synchronous measurements of line pull and shaft power on both propeller shafts to comply with the International Standard for Bollard Pull Trials. The data acquisition system on the wheelhouse presents the live line pull and 5-minute averages of pull and power. The picture of the graph is taken during build-up of the pull and shows the dynamics in pull and importance of continuous measurements. The client received the official bollard pull trial report as deliverable.

Client case

Tersan Shipyard

For Tersan Shipyard, JMC performed the acceptance sea trials for a series of cruise vessels built for Havila: Havila Castor, Havila Polaris and Havila Pollux. By integrating JMC’s data acquisition system with the ship’s system, we performed synchronous recordings of:

  • D-GPS, wind, ship motions
  • Power, RPM, propeller pitch and steering angle on both thrusters.
  • Power, RPM, fuel consumption, fuel temperature and charge air coolant temperature, of all four generators
  • Total generated power, power to propulsion drives and hotel load.

With this synchronously recorded dataset, JMC analysed and reported the performance of the vessels in terms of manoeuvring, speed/power and engine fuel consumption.

Client case

Joint Research Project

For the Joint Research Project (JoRes), we conducted high-fidelity speed/power trials with the objective to determine the performance of a RoRo Ferry with the highest possible accuracy. The JoRes project is striving to increase confidence in numerical methods to determine ship performance. And for that, properly conducted trials are needed!

For a tug, we conducted an even broader scope: manoeuvring, bollard pull and speed/power trials. For this case, reducing the uncertainty of the results was the key, as the results are used as benchmark for numerical methods.

Client case

EEXI trials

For an international client, JMC performed speed/power trials with the purpose to determine the current EEXI of the vessel. This is valuable information, as actions may be required by IMO to improve the vessel’s EEXI rating. For this client, we performed synchronous recordings of D-GPS, wind, propeller shaft RPM and Power.

Client case

MARIN/Norsafe - research

Even freefall lifeboats are tested for speed/power, manoeuvring and bollard pull performance by Janse Maritime Consultancy! The work was conducted for MARIN (Maritime Research Institute Netherlands), with the purpose to tune and improve simulations of VIKING Life-Saving Equipment A/S lifeboats. The track plot shows the 720 degrees turning circles at different rudder angles, corrected for current, wind and waves.

Client case

Yacht

For a shipyard that design, builds and converts superyachts, JMC performed manoeuvring trials as part of a feasibility study. The owner wishes to lengthen the vessel, but what consequences does that have on manoeuvrability? The manoeuvring trials included turning circles, zig-zag and spiral manoeuvres by measuring GPS, ship motions, rudder angles and propulsion power synchronously. This pre-conversion trial is the benchmark. After lengthening of the vessel, JMC will return and repeat the trials to verify the results.

Client case

DEME-Group

For DEME-Group, JMC performed sea trials onboard the giant crane vessel “ORION” to assess the manoeuvring capabilities and speed/power performance. The manoeuvring booklet, wheelhouseposter, pilot card and speed/power performance report were the deliverables for this beauty with four azimuthing thrusters.

Client case

Boskalis

JMC performed several sea trials for Boskalis to assess the speed/power performance and manoeuvring capabilities after substantial modifications of these vessels. Where an update of the manoeuvring capabilities is a regulatory requirement, the new speed/power relation gives valuable feedback to designers on the actual performance. Deliverables include wheelhouseposters, manoeuvring booklets and speed/power performance reports.
